This week, all eyes are on Jackson Hole and Jerome Powell’s speech.
The September rate cut, the review of the monetary framework, and his track record at the head of the Fed will all be under scrutiny.
The central theme of the symposium: labor markets in transition.
While unemployment remains low (4–4.2%), job creation is slowing sharply.
The average has dropped to 35,000 jobs per month compared to more than 200,000 at the start of the year.
Lower immigration reduces labor supply, limiting the number of jobs needed to maintain full employment.
But weak wage growth also suggests a demand problem.
Small businesses report declining sales, which is weighing on hiring.
The key question is whether this is just a temporary slowdown or the start of a deeper downturn.
The Fed must juggle between full employment and price stability, in a context of rising inflation.
